Abstract | Australian public universities are statutory creations with common principal objects that clearly focus on providing higher education and research. However most universities have, by necessity, adopted a vigorous approach to commercial enterprise that in some circumstances have given rise to criticism. The session will focus on the following questions: 1. Should universities participate in commercial activity? 2. Could a university become insolvent? 3. If a university suffers a “disturbing pattern of weak governance and financial control” and has accumulated an insurmountable deficit, what should be the consequences? |
