Abstract

This chapter outlines a Marxist view of racism in Australia. It argues that Australian racism is grounded in three interweaving dynamics: the dispossession, genocide and social control of indigenous people; the strategic fears of the Australian ruling class about emerging powers in Asia; and the use of racism as a means of dividing and ruling the working class in Australia. Using this framework it examines the emergence of the White Australia policy, racism towards immigrants, multiculturalism, and the possibilities for anti-racism.
