Abstract | The topic of pilgrimage has been explored by scholars within the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, sociology, and religious studies. The existing literature on the topic addresses the transformational nature of the pilgrimage journey on the pilgrim. This transformational nature can be defined in terms of physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual constructs. Because of the transformative characteristics of pilgrimage, the topic has potential implications for the counseling profession. The goal of this paper is to explore various dimensions of pilgrimage as they relate to therapeutic benefits as well as to investigate the implications for counselors who work with pilgrims. |
