Abstract | On the morning of 5 February 1857 Peter Glynn crawled into the grounds of Caboolture Homestead. Glynn was seriously injured as a result of an Aboriginal attack which his fellow timber-getter did not survive, forcing him to spend three nights alone in the rainforest scrub which then lined the Caboolture River in southern Queensland. This attack at what became known as Deadman's Pocket developed into pioneering folklore. An investigation into Glynn's past however helps to place this attack into the context of a frontier that was both sexually violent and brutal and helps us to re-construct Aboriginal law thirty-five years after the coming of permanent British settlement to the region. |
