Abstract | In July 1947, the Minister for Immigration, Arthur Calwell, gained an important concession in his negotiations with the International Refugee Organisation (IRO) for admission of Central and Eastern European displaced persons (DPs) to Australia. It was agreed that ‘no difficulties would be raised to the return to Germany of migrants who had proved unsuitable in Australia’. Unfortunately for Calwell, and his successor, Harold Holt, this agreement was informal and not committed to writing, and both the IRO and Germany placed obstacles in the way with regard to its practice. This chapter will examine the deportation policies and extradition requests surrounding displaced persons who were accused of being war criminals, focusing particularly on the rhetoric surrounding Australian deportation policy and the actual practice of deportations for those deemed a security risk or, indeed, whose extradition was requested by a foreign government. |
