Abstract | Introduction: A literature review provides a synthesis on a selection of papers about a specific topic. This is used by health practitioners in critical care as in other specialties when making clinical practice decisions. The task of knowledge transfer through the review process of scientific papers involves a variety of methodologies with differing expectations on the quality and rigor that is applied. Exploration on the types of review methodologies selected by authors of critical care literature reveals the extent that choice of methodology has on how papers are selected appraised and influence critical care practice. Objectives: This scoping review systematically maps the breadth of current literature with the objective of identifying gaps in literature and the types of review methodologies used by interdisciplinary authors synthesising literature in critical care. Methods: Arksey and O’Malley’s framework for conducting a scoping review and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for scoping review (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines were followed. Conclusion(s): This scoping review provides an overview of the types of review methodologies most often undertaken by interdisciplinary authors synthesising critical care literature. It illuminates current trends from a critical care multidisciplinary perspective on knowledge gaps and knowledge production. This knowledge and information can be used by critical care practitioners and researchers to inform their practice and future research agendas. |
