Abstract

Psychology educators are increasingly turning to immersive, experiential approaches to enhance student wellbeing, engagement, and professional readiness. This presentation explores the impact of Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) placements for postgraduate psychology students, who participated as observers and co-facilitators in community-based programs supporting at-risk youth, neurodivergent individuals, culturally diverse groups, and trauma survivors.
Drawing on student reflections and program partner insights, findings highlight EAL as a transformative training experience. Students reported enhanced emotional regulation, cultural responsiveness, and therapeutic presence, as well as increased confidence in working across disciplines and with diverse populations. The outdoor, nature-based setting and embodied interaction with horses provided a unique context for practicing mindfulness, relational sensitivity, and non-verbal communication.
Students described the experience as deeply impactful, fostering personal growth, self-awareness, and a renewed sense of purpose. Observing real-time therapeutic change—such as increased resilience, emotional insight, and self-efficacy—helped bridge theory and practice, reinforcing key psychological principles.
EAL placements also align with PsyBA competencies, supporting ethical professionalism, reflexivity, and inclusive practice. As psychology education evolves, equine-assisted programs offer a compelling model for sustainable, strengths-based learning that integrates wellbeing, cultural safety, and clinical skill development.
