Abstract

The 2019 Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) guidelines enabled universities to provide stand-alone sixth-year clinical master programs to students who had already gained their PsyBA general registration. As the first university to offer a standalone 6th year masters program, UniSQ is now in its 4th year of supporting generally-registered psychologists seeking specialised training and endorsement in clinical psychology. The implementation of this program has led to various pedagogical and practical discoveries over the past four years.

These students have unique needs, necessitating a tailored and empathic approach in teaching, placements, and overall program support. Recognising their professional experience, motivations for clinical training, and the balance between work, family, and study is crucial for fostering a positive learning experience and timely program completion. With each subsequent annual offering, UniSQ has continued to modify our teaching format for this cohort and significantly adapted its sixth-year program to accommodate both provisional and generally-registered psychologists. This presentation will share our insights and learning over the last four years, including our recent survey data on the expectations of these students for their clinical training, and the key modifications made to UniSQ’s sixth year program to enhance the overall student experience and outcomes.
