Abstract

Effective student voice requires not only inclusion in decision-making but also meaningful recognition of students’ time, labour, and leadership. This presentation
focuses on Principle 6 of the STEPUPP framework for student partnership — Provide appropriate reward and recognition — which emphasises valuing student contributions through fair, transparent, and contextually appropriate acknowledgment.
Drawing on findings from the 2025 Student Voice Rewards and Recognition Survey conducted by Student Voice Australasia, this presentation examines how Higher Education Institutions across Australia and New Zealand currently reward and
recognise student voice activities. The survey reveals a highly variable landscape, with inconsistent practices and limited formal frameworks. While some institutions
offer payment, awards, or co-curricular recognition, many rely on informal acknowledgements that risk undervaluing student contributions. The session will explore key trends, highlight examples of effective practice, and
prompt discussion on what constitutes meaningful recognition. Through analysis of institutional responses, it offers evidence-informed recommendations to support more intentional, equitable, and strategic approaches that strengthen student engagement cultures and embed Principle 6 into institutional policy and practice.
