Abstract | Loyalty or commitment to organisations has declined, partly as a consequence of organisational downsizing. Expectations of having a 'job for life' with one company are no longer realistic. Such rewards originally formed the employees' side of the psychological contract, in return for which they committed to the organisation. Unlike loyalty to the organisation, employees' commitment to their fellow workers or to their own development may have strengthened. Other important desires, such as that for job satisfaction and meaningful work, are just as important today. Employers can capitalise on these other needs with alternative strategies for engendering commitment, including job design. |
