Abstract | This paper proposes a novel extendible framework for residential gateway to enable IMS based handheld devices to access and control equipment's present at remote residence efficiently. Firstly, we discuss few related works to investigate and analyze the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and the role of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) in IMS services. Second, we discuss few characteristics of DLNA architecture and detail constraints associated with discovery phase to cater services like remote home access to the user on-the-go. Consequently, we introduce the proposed framework, embodying a set of procedures, which employs a different perspective to achieve bridging amongst devices operating over various protocols like Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP), Zigbee, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and so on. The architectural framework design reduces time-to-deployment while addressing inherent challenges like protocol translation and extendibility, encountered while offering such IMS based remote home access services. To validate our approach, an experiment was performed using the said framework on OMAP hardware platform acting as a residential gateway to establish connections between the home network and external network. Experimental results lead us to conclude that the framework is effective at providing a cost-efficient, smooth and swift way of inter-connecting among various types of home devices and accessing them remotely from outside of the home environment. |
