Abstract

Analyticity of elastic S-matrix element in the complex K-plane is discussed for local energy independent nuclear optical potential with the Coulomb potential. It is found that the usual symmetry relations of the S-matrix hold. However, an essential singularity is introduced at the origin of the complex K-plane in the so-called nuclear S-matirx element in addition to the infinite number of zeros and poles apparently introduced due to the Coulomb potential which are on the imaginary axis. All these singularities and zeros are redundant and are disappeared in the total S-matrix element which is more physically meaningful than the nuclear S-matirx element. It can be shown that the essential singularity at the origin is a mathematical artifice and hence it is unphysical
