Abstract | Post-flight recovery of USAF/DSTO's HIFiRE-0 mission indicated that the patches of permanent-change thermal paints applied on the aluminium instrumentation can of the vehicle had undergone visible colour change due to heating during the flight. Calibration of the same permanent change thermal paints have been performed at UNSW Canberra using an electric-arc based heating rig which reproduced surface temperature histories obtained from transient numerical conjugate-heat-transfer simulations to quantify the heating history of the painted region. The electric-arc based heating rig is able to replicate the transient heating histories encountered during hypersonic flight. Numerical simulations have been conducted to predict the temperature rise of the vehicle during it's flight which act as an input for the calibration system. The change in the colour of the interested paint due to in-flight heating has been compared and quantified using the CIELAB colour space. © 2012 by Rishabh Choudhury & Andrew J. Neely. |
