Abstract | State of the art re-entry tools estimate failure based on either aero-mechanical or thermo-chemical loads. In this study, a new approach is reported with a combination of these loads. This paper presents the layout, design and first experiments. These featured the coupling of the thermo-chemical load in a plasma wind tunnel with the aero-mechanical load through a mechanical actuator stressing samples. The failure process was simulated for aluminum and steel probes subjected to a plasma condition corresponding to the 2016 re-entry of CYGNUS OA-6 at an altitude of 87 km. The tensile conditions are based on free fight wind tunnel tests previously performed at the University of Southern Queensland. The system was tested with basic materials and is now deemed capable of testing spacecraft materials under combined aero-mechanical and thermo-chemical re-entry loads. |
