Abstract | This paper proposes and subsequently investigates a novel multi-source approach to broadband infrared gas detection based on light emitting diodes (LEDs). The intended application is carbon dioxide and methane gas sensing where low-cost, rugged, self-calibrating and portable instruments are required, however the approach described is sufficiently general to be applied to other gases and applications, such as fire detection. The novelty of the approach is twofold. First, we employ nonspecific sources of infrared irradiation, rather than sensors which are tailored to a specific species. Second, and more importantly, we propose the use of an array of infrared sources coupled to a single detector in order to obtain enhanced precision and lower detection limits than are possible with single source-detector combinations. |
