Abstract | This paper describes some of our experiences in using freely available network diagnostic aids as an adjunct to teaching the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) suite, and discusses our impressions of their suitability for teaching in both on-campus and off-campus modes. A particular focus is on the suitability of such tools for off-campus distance-mode learning, where several problems are present in the acquisition, installation, and use of such tools. Although there are many reviews of such tools from a network administration point of view, these invariably assume an expert level of knowledge, and as such are somewhat inaccessible to the student beginning in this |
