Abstract | Ice accretion is a significant problem for turbofan engines, and can lead to catastrophic failure in-flight. Detecting incipient ice build-up in the turbine stator is challenging, and a robust, non-contact method would provide useful information to aid the detection process. An experimental facility – the Research Icing Wind Tunnel (RIWT-USQ) – has been developed to investigate ice formation processes and novel forms of instrumentation. This paper outlines the salient aspects of the wind tunnel, and describes the development of selected instrumentation aspects. Preliminary results from a novel non-contact measurement approach are also described. The wind tunnel utilizes a water spray with liquid nitrogen injection to emulate in-flight conditions. A carbon fibre aerofoil is instrumented with multiple temperature and humidity sensors, whose output is recorded in real-time during ice accretion experiments. Results from the microwave |
