Abstract | This essay uses an account of the literary history of the Darling Downs region in Queensland, Australia to explore some of the issues relating to regional history and identity. It explores the ways in which concepts of regionalism 'collect' a literature into a 'history' and pays particular attention to literary institutions and reading communities as well as texts and authors. The account examines gender, race, place and identity and includes discussions of the works of George Essex Evans, Steele Rudd, Alice Monkton Duncan-Kemp, Dorothy Cottrell, Margaret Trist, David Rowbotham, Bruce Dawe and Jean Kent. |
