Abstract

I intend to examine Lawson's elevation into the
academic canon in the 1950s and 60s in the context of recent arguments on the cultural and political role of English as a discipline within the school and the university. Having done this, however, I want to pursue the alternative promotion and use of Lawson's reputation in the Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of the Arts. I have chosen the university as one of my sites of investigation because it is in the university that the canon receives its most sustained expression. I have chosen the Grenfell Festival as the other site because it emerges at precisely the same historical moment that gives rise to a push for a national canon in the universities.
By comparing these two alternative uses of Lawson I wish to argue that literary canonisation is an attempt to regulate cultural significance and that this attempt cannot be effectively understood unless examined against a background of the wider social, cultural and political utility of
literary authority ...
