Abstract | This essay examines the search for a level of culture appropriate to History, Commemoration, Military Instruction and Civic example in the twelve volume Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918. It argues that the Official History is a product of flows of culture between Britain and Australia and pays particular attention to the key personel and institutions involved in the exchange. Throughout it is interested in the way classical style was related to the level of culture available to an Australian and an international public. |
