Abstract | G. B. Edwards's fictional autobiography, The Book of Ebenezer Le Page (1981), is an intriguing but little-known novel. Although it was a popular commercial success on publication, it has received scant attention from literary scholars. One of the reasons for this neglect is that the book is hard to pigeon-hole and deals with a little-understood part of the British Isles, being set wholly on Guernsey between the 1890s and the 1960s. This article examines the novel's context in terms of the author's life, other novels about Guernsey and the Channel Islands, and the history and culture of Guernsey itself. |
