Abstract

Subtitled 'Ethnic Conflicts and International Rivalry in Xinjiang, 1944-1949', this detailed study by David Wang, who lived in Xinjiang until 1979, thoroughly documents a turbulent period in the history of China's remote northwestern borderlands. Wang provides an in-depth reconstruction and analysis of crucial events and issues such as the Yili Rebellion (also referred to as the Yining Incident) and the establishment of the Eastern Turkestan Republic along the northwestern borders of the province, Kuomintang policies delivered through Urumqi (especially under Zhang Zhizhong), the 'two administrations' vying for control during the 1946-49 period, and the 'peaceful liberation' of Xinjiang by the Chinese Communist Party in 1949.
