Abstract | 'Research' is something of a buzzword among writers of popular novels. It is a topic often brought up at literary festivals among panels of authors who are concerned about being taken seriously. Specialist knowledge of certain kinds has a high value in the book-selling stakes: any fiction writer who has flown an aircraft or conducted brain surgery, who has a background in foreign affairs or espionage, or who has travelled in extreme environments is seen to have 'done their research' and is respected accordingly. In other words, research is assumed to be practice-led and understood to be the factual dimension of a fictional work; the writer's job is to make that dimension intriguing or adventurous. |
