Abstract | Marshall-Hall's Symphony in E flat of 1903 is probably the first important symphony composed in Australia during the early post-Federation period. Its idiom is similar to that of Parry and Stanford and reflects the influence of both Brahms and Wagner. Despite its clear classical structure the composer supplied two different programmatic interpretations of the 'meaning' of the music. Unlike his Australian contemporaries Joshua Ives and Alfred Hill, Marshall-Hall's symphony demonstrates a progressive 1890s symphonic style and is worthy of both preservation and performance. |
