Abstract

As with some other content within the primary school curriculum, a number of teachers are anxious about teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and in teaching about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages. Subsequently, these aspects are often not addressed well, and in some instances not at all - not because of any position on the part of teachers, but due to apprehension borne from a lack of knowledge that has resulted in a pedagogy of benign neglect.
Preservice teachers have a great opportunity to spend time with staff members at the Indigenous Education Unit (there is one at every Australian university); to consult with lecturers in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education; to utilise university libraries; to talk with other preservice teachers; and, while observing good practice when on professional experience, to collect a range of teaching tips and aids.
