Abstract | This chapter explores the lawyer in rural and regional Australia’. It sifts biographical literature on lawyers in rural and regional practice, and gives an account of three moral archetypes of the ‘bush lawyer’: the gentleman, the larrikin, and the activist. By analysing a range of literature, including scholarly history, biography, autobiography, obituaries, law journal profiles and professional magazines, the chapter gives the opportunity to reflect on the background, profile and professional development of bush lawyers, as well as the specific ethical challenges they confront. |
