Abstract

This chapter seeks to investigate the impact of socio-psychological factors that may contribute to the maintenance of Arabic language within the Arabic-speaking community in the regional Queensland city of Toowoomba. A qualitative approach was utilised in order to explore the language maintenance phenomenon through engaging in the everyday life of the Arabic speakers. Data was collected though participant observations and in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 adults who were selected using a mixed purposeful sampling strategy, The findings of this study show that the Arabic language is well maintained among the Arabic speakers because of their positive attitudes and loyalty to maintain and preserve their language for their children. The conclusions of the study are envisaged to have the potential to be used to enrich the knowledge and theories of language maintenance, as well as helping to reconsider the multilingualism and multiculturalism structure of Australian society.
