Abstract | This research project seeks to explore the major role that the religion plays in the maintenance of Arabic language among the Arabic-speaking immigrants in the regional Queensland city of Toowoomba, Australia. A qualitative approach was applied to investigate the language maintenance phenomenon through engaging in the everyday life of the Arabic speakers. Additionally, the descriptive and interpretive ethnography was adopted to understand this community from insider and outsider perspectives aiming to enhance the quality and richness of the results. Data were collected through participant observations and in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 adult individuals. Subsequently, thematic analysis was undertaken which involved organizing, exploring and coding the data into several themes, displaying and interpreting the data to answer the research questions. The findings revealed that religion is an indicator for the maintenance of Arabic language within the Arabic speakers in Toowoomba. The conclusions of this research aim to enrich the knowledge and theories of language maintenance and provide awareness to the Arabic speakers about the importance of maintaining their language. |
