Abstract | In recent years, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has proven to play a substantial role in enhancing listening skills in studying English as a foreign language (EFL). With the development of CALL, learners have more opportunities to gain exposure to online activities which increase their potential for improved listening comprehension skills. However, the Vietnamese educational philosophy regarding English learning is traditionally associated with memorizing. In addition, the advantages of CALL in the Vietnamese educational context have not yet been fully explored and understood. In general Vietnamese learners lack English language skills due to ineffective teaching methods. This study was carried out at the Centre for Foreign Studies (CFS) at the College of Finance and Customs in Vietnam. The participants included 20 young learners, aged from 14 to 16 in both the treatment and the control groups. The data were collected from pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, interviews and a quasi-experimental method. Learners in the treatment group were exposed to CALL, whereas the control group studied only with the traditional textbook teaching method. The results of the study indicated that the treatment group had stronger listening skills after the intervention. This group was also more motivated and they were more relaxed in their approach to studying English language. In conclusion, the use of CALL improved their listening skills and heightened their interest in acquiring language competence. |
