Abstract | The study reported in this chapter included the application of ethics of care and moral education as a means of revisioning the relationships that are possible and appropriate between researchers and research participants. According to Noddings (2010), we are frequently in contact with people with dissimilar values to our own. This may lead to new moral tribulations that can be defused through moral education. Owens and Ennis (2005) expect that effective teachers should have the ability to enact an ethic of care in teaching. They also state that ' . . . teachers need to be able to care for themselves, their students, the content, and other members of the school community' (p. 392) through moral education. As a way of responding to a moral education issue, this chapter describes a community project offered to five Australian adolescents to teach the participants elementary Afrikaans language skills in order to communicate orally with members of the Afrikaans-speaking community in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. In addition, the chapter traces the development of effective and ethical relationships with the participants in this research project. |
