Abstract

Despite a significant body of research that posits that overall musicianship can benefit from musical activities such as the learning of songs by ear and improvisation, there does not seem to have been an increase in these aspects of learning in the general music education community in Australia. The chasm between formally trained, reading music practitioners and those who play music by ear or other means remains wide, with little mutual understanding of how all the activities support each other in general musicianship. This paper seeks to survey the evidence for integrated musical participation and reflect on the benefits of applying this model.
