Abstract

Taylor, Johnston, and Ryan outline a community-centered approach to natural hazard crisis communication that challenges historical legacies of command and control to facilitate a capacity-building approach. They advance five principles to inform a community-focused framework to guide community engagement that helps build local communities in being resilient to natural hazards. Taylor et al. propose that natural hazard crisis communication be grounded in the evolving communication engagement theory approach. Their framework has larger outcomes for communities as it will make them more capable of coordinated action on other topics. This chapter complements Robertson and Stephens' Chapter 21 that focuses on disaster preparedness and Heath's Chapter 19 that focuses on mitigation.
