Abstract

This report assesses the quality, chemical composition, and microstructural characteristics of waste
glass using a combination of analytical methods, including particle size distribution analysis, organic
content testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
Data on annual glass production was obtained from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main
Roads (TMR) and supplemented by published figures from private waste glass recycling facilities.
Queensland produces over 300,000 tonnes of waste glass each year, with significant stockpiles located
in Brisbane, Cairns, Rockhampton, and Townsville. Mapping and material flow analysis indicate that
substantial volumes of waste glass are routinely transported between regional material recovery facilities
(MRFs) and centralised processing sites, demonstrating the logistical potential for integrating recycled
glass into road construction projects across the state
