Abstract

First the content of Agenda 21 was searched for references to the responsibilities it prescribes for occupational and environmental health. In this regard, the relevant terms of reference questions prescribed by the Johannesburg World Summit (page 12, this work) were interpreted as though they applied solely to the occupational and environmental health domain. The results of this search, and the critical analysis it allowed, were
compiled as a commentary and distributed to ICOH members for assessment. A final draft was produced in the light of members' contributions and a published version was presented at the Johannesburg World Summit, within the government compound, during selected high level meetings. The report is a general assessment of the efficacy, in 2002, of Agenda 21's engagement with occupational and environmental health and safety. The report also lists actions that might need to be taken to address emerging occupational and environmental health issues.
