Abstract

This article examines several of the texts which contributed to the development in France of laïcité and explains some of the key events in the affair of the headscarf and the subsequent legal cases. It goes on to discuss the provisions and the likely consequences of the new law on secularism which cam into force in most French public schools in September 2004, and the implications of this law for the principle of secularism itself.
