Abstract | In March 2009, Mauricio Funes was elected President of El Salvador, securing over 50 per cent of the vote in the first round. His victory marked the first time a member of the left-wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) had won the presidential election since the end of the country's vicious civil war in 1992.
