Abstract

This chapter overviews and analyses a Newschart assignment developed for a course in Environmental Communication. This is part of an assignment developed as an alternative to assessing students with an exam, and is an integral part of the overall course design, in that it helps students develop research skills that enrich their understanding and grasp of environmental communication. The Newschart is dramatically successful in both raising students’ general awareness and understanding of public, political, and economic affairs. It increases their understanding of theoretical and conceptual ideas introduced in class, and results in their developing more sophisticated analyses of media reporting in relation to environmental issues.
