Abstract

This presentation invites participants to engage with mindfulness techniques to critically engage with their fumblings as researchers and practitioners. To frame this work, the presenter will share their autoethnography of reflexively facing difficult realisations through lived experiences of devising, creating, re-conceptualising, theorising, and researching orchestral concerts for children with community orchestras in Australia. The narrative emerges from the presenter’s beginnings as a graduate teacher sent to a regional town with a passion for sharing orchestras with young people, to the following years of trial and error in practice, then emerging as a qualitative researcher, to now as a practiced curator of concerts for children. The data generated are interpreted using hermeneutics and the sociological work of Bourdieu.

The findings and activities shared from this autoethnography provide fellow researchers with an example of breathing into difficult realisations about ourselves as practitioners, and finding effective ways forward.
