Abstract | During the 1950s and 1960s, Australia was a world leader in the specialised field of low-frequency radio astronomy, with two geographically distinct areas of activity. One was in the Sydney region, and the other was on the island of Tasmania to the south of the Australian mainland. Research in the Sydney region began in 1949 through the CSIRO’s Division of Radiophysics. Initially, it was carried out at the Hornsby Valley field station before transferring to the Fleurs field station. This paper details the low-frequency radio astronomy carried out at the Fleurs field station between 1956 and 1961 using the 19.7 MHz Shain Cross. |
