Abstract | This study examined elite strength and conditioning coaches’ (SCCs) experiences and perspectives of coaching sportswomen. Specifically, the research aimed to understand how biological sex and gender (stereotypes, assumptions, biases) influence SCCs’ coaching practices. Analysis of interview data produced three categories relating to coaches’ (1) physical understandings of sportswomen, (2) emotional understandings and (3) relational understandings/ approaches to coaching. Interviews suggested that in the absence of alternative knowledge, some coaches drew on experiences of working with sportsmen and gender stereotypes to interpret sportswomen. Coaches were not confident in discussing several aspects of coaching sportswomen (i.e. sportswomen’s emotionality, how to approach menstruation, whether sportswomen should be treated differently to sportsmen) and appeared to lack explicit knowledge on gender or how gender biases may be (unconsciously) impacting their coaching practices. This research highlights opportunities to revise strength and conditioning professional education to incorporate both sports science and sociology to effectively prepare coaches to work with diverse bodies and elite sportswomen. |
