Abstract

The paper provides a structured context for considering the participation of the socioeconomically disadvantaged in
Australian higher education. It reviews the means by which this group is defined and identified, and examines reasons
why they are under represented in Australian higher education. Developing the premise that considerable scope exists for improved, more proactive equity planning in Australian higher education, suggestions are made for planning strategies that could serve as a platform for increasing participation by the socioeconomically disadvantaged.
