Abstract | In this chapter we describe the scope of practice, education, and regulation of Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) in Australia. Regulation occurs through a national university course accreditation scheme administered by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). We outline the education and development of clinical competencies aligned to the scope of practice of AEPs, summarise where AEPs fit within the health care system and indicate how AEPs may engage in multidisciplinary practice. Because exercise physiology is one of the newer entrants into allied health, we also provide a brief history of the profession. We touch on some evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of exercise, and conclude by demonstrating these scientific bases for the profession through case examples. |
