Abstract | Chiropractic and osteopathy are considered together in this chapter because these professions have similar backgrounds and educational approaches. These professionals use similar forms of evidence to inform clinical management, and have a similar research base from which to draw evidence of effectiveness of treatment. In Australia, chiropractic and osteopathy are primary contact manual therapy allied health disciplines. Chiropractors and osteopaths consult with clients who have musculoskeletal complaints, and a range of other health complaints that may have musculoskeletal manifestations. A large portion of the evidence which osteopaths and chiropractors use has been developed by a range of manual therapy professions, including professions other than osteopathy and chiropractic. Sharing research across allied health disciplines may be an efficient way to distribute evidence to inform best practice for the care of common conditions (e.g. management of acute low back pain), but all of the questions of one discipline cannot possibly be addressed by the research of another discipline. There is an increasing need for the chiropractic and osteopathic professions to adopt their own research strategies and generate research which is unique to chiropractic and osteopathic treatment philosophies. |
