| Abstract | The past decade has seen an increase in the use of educational videos in tertiary education settings. Well-designed educational videos have regularly been shown to lead to higher learning gains than static media such as text accompanied by still images, and live lectures. Many discussions of design for video in educational research focus on quantitative factors such as duration. However, this focus discounts the importance of video which is one half of the medium of delivery. Video, and all designed moving picture modalities, consist of two component parts: the content and the form. This article draws on literature from the fields of cinema and education to explore the elements of a well-designed educational video. In addition, it presents a pedagogical framework for their use in higher education contexts. |
