Abstract | Modern slavery and gender-based violence cannot be understood without reference to historical contexts. This chapter is based on the historical case study of Sara Baartman together with more contemporary examples of activism in South Africa, Uganda, and the United States to illustrate how slavery and its meanings have shaped knowledge production across the centuries. The historical uncertainties and slippages surrounding terminology and classification regarding slavery, apartheid, and sexual violence offer insight into the degree to which similar uncertainties persist today. Consequently, we argue that issues of terminology and classification have important ethical implications for both historical and contemporary social science research in ways that are inherently connected to current debates regarding the decolonisation of knowledge. To achieve ethical best practice, we suggest that social scientists could benefit from a rich understanding of the historical contexts of their research about slavery and gender-based violence, as well as the historical situatedness of contemporary data collection. |
