Abstract | Nellie Dowell was an R. Bell and Co. ‘match girl’ whose early working years coincided with neighbouring Bryant and May’s infamous 1888 match factory strike in Bow, East London. By contrast, ‘heiress’ Muriel Lester was born to a wealthy but civic-minded nouveau riche Nonconformist family. This book traces their journey. |
