Biography
Professor Brad Carter is the Director of the Centre for Astrophysics within the Institute for Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences at the University of Southern Queensland. His research focus is on understanding the shared evolution of stars and their planetary systems, and his research interests include stellar astrophysics, planetary science and scientific instrumentation. In his research he has contributed to the discovery of over forty planets orbiting stars other than the Sun, and has played a key role in developing Australia’s participation in Zeeman Doppler Imaging research that uses stellar spectra taken in polarised light to visualise stellar surfaces, magnetic fields, and winds and space weather. At UniSQ he has led the development of astronomical and space sciences into a research program rated by the Australian Research Council in the top available band of “well above world standard”. For some years he also led the development of USQ’s Mt Kent Observatory into an astronomical and space sciences facility whose observations now support international collaborations with leading research organisations, and which receives funding from the NASA-NSF NN-EXPLORE program. As the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship he travelled to the USA in 2022 for a project entitled Advancing Bilateral Cooperation in Space using Astronomy.
