Biography

Dr. Md Alamgir Hossain (SMIEEE) is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), Toowoomba, and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Griffith University. He is widely recognised as a leading researcher in renewable energy systems, hydrogen microgrids, and power electronics, with his work making both national and international impact.

Over the past decade, Dr. Hossain has built a distinguished career across academia and industry. Prior to joining UniSQ in 2025, he served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Queensland Micro- and Nano-technology Centre (QMNC), Griffith University, for 4.5 years. There, he established Australia’s first hydrogen DC microgrid laboratory, funded by the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre. This world-first laboratory has become a benchmark for hydrogen-based power system research, enabling experimental studies on transient effects, system stability, power sharing, and economic operation. His leadership in this initiative directly contributed to the practical implementation of Tasmania’s first Green Hydrogen Production and Research Facility in Hobart, bridging the gap between academic research and industry application.

Before Griffith, Dr. Hossain worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, where he developed machine learning models for forecasting intermittent renewable energy sources, contributing to early advancements in AI-enabled power system planning. Earlier in his career, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Bangladesh, where he mentored students and laid the foundation for his future research trajectory.

Dr. Hossain completed his PhD (2019) and Master of Engineering (2016) at UNSW, supported by competitive scholarships including the University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) and the UNSW Canberra – Study Canberra Scholarship. His doctoral and master’s work focused on modelling, optimisation, and control of renewable energy systems for both grid-connected and off-grid applications. He earned his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with First Class (1st) Honours from Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) in 2012, where he was awarded the Prime Minister and President Gold Medals for outstanding academic achievement.

His career achievements include over 110 publications, with more than 5,200 citations (h-index 36, FWCI 2.47), and over $1.6 million in research funding secured through national and international grants. His research has been recognised in the World’s Top 2% Scientists list (2021–2025) and has shaped international policy discussions, notably influencing the OECD’s Education Working Papers (Agency in the Anthropocene, No. 297).

Dr. Hossain’s contributions extend to teaching and mentorship. He has successfully co-supervised eight HDR students to completion and is currently supervising six others across hydrogen energy systems, microgrids, and AI-driven power optimisation. He also teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in power electronics, renewable energy integration, and electrical machines, where he integrates real-world industry challenges into the classroom.

He has been honoured with numerous awards, including High Impact Publication Awards, recognition as a Top Peer Reviewer (Publons, 2019), Outstanding Reviewer (Elsevier), and multiple commendations for research excellence. In 2023, he was elevated to Senior Member of the IEEE, recognising his significant contributions to the advancement of electrical and electronic engineering.

Today, Dr. Hossain continues to drive innovation at the intersection of hydrogen, renewable energy, and digital technologies, positioning UniSQ as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions. His vision is to accelerate the decarbonisation of energy systems through hydrogen-enabled microgrids, AI-powered control frameworks, and collaborative industry partnerships.
