An evaluation of bereavement support in Toowoomba

Anecdotal evidence suggests there is a shortage of support for recently bereaved people in Toowoomba. Furthermore it was reported that most of the available support services are too specific, or in formats which may not be suitable for people who are uncomfortable in a group environment. The objective of the study was a needs analysis to substantiate what is largely anecdotal evidence on existing needs and gaps.

Potential participants were contacted initially by phone to establish the type of bereavement services they offer. Interviews were semi structured and based around a questionnaire developed by the project reference group.

From a total of 65 potential providers 23 services currently provide actual bereavement support. Only three services are exclusively bereavement specific. However, within several other services the support is restricted to the medical condition of the deceased e.g. cancer, or affiliation of the deceased to the organisation e.g. resident of an aged care facility. People who provide bereavement support include psychologists, counsellors, doctors and the clergy. The majority of providers are paid for their work. However the large majority of services on offer are free and are offered in a variety of formats. Service providers largely are able to meet their demand for services. Gaps in provision were identified for children less than 13 year of age, as well as support for people who support others through grief & loss.

While there is no convincing evidence of the requirement of additional bereavement services input from bereaved people is required to substantiate this conclusion.
