Abstract | Toowoomba is Australia’s largest regional city and the road network within the city is well designed with a reasonable number of roundabouts. This study is to analyse the crash records to identify poorly performing roundabouts with the scope of re-examining the geometric features contributing to road crashes. The crash and traffic data from 49 roundabouts for a period from 2001 to 2010 were used in the analysis. Statistical analysis revealed that the multivehicle road crash type was the most prevalent type and these crashes are most likely to occur around 7am or 4pm. Several methods were used to rank safety performance, and among them the EPDO method was identified as most appropriate. These findings were useful for authorities to revisit the sites to do a complete investigation to make modifications to the road geometry. |
